This textbook has been designed for absolute beginners and it contains themes relevant to the real needs of Peace Corps Volunteers in Slovakia. The goals of this textbook are to develop reading and comprehension skills and to introduce and practice vocabulary. In order to accommodate everybody's needs and learning styles, a student may study the textbook independently - outside of school or class, for example - besides working with instructors.
Some themes are repeated 2 - 3 times in various situations. For example, we repeat
vocabulary dealing with food in the restaurant chapter and then later again in the shopping chapter. Thus the textbook has been conceptualized on the principle of vocabulary building through a "spiraling" and "layering" method, which means that each theme taken will be built upon in the following chapters, always incorporating the previous topics and terms. In addition, to assess the learner's comprehension, every sixth lesson is a review, in which selected vocabulary is expanded through use in new situations while the grammar structures are strengthened.

It also uses the same terms and vocabulary as the textbook. It contains various types of exercises that are aimed at practicing the vocabulary and the selected grammar structures. We recommend that the workbook be used especially for individualized home-study.
